When Mats Hummels was here last time,
Lucien Favre didn’t have a job. HSV fought for the Euro League
places and a few days before, Mats scored his last Bundesliga
goal with his foot so far. Hummels’ return – right now
in your matchday magazine. After 1379 days, he’s back
in the matchday magazine. Great to have you here, Mats!
Good to be back! In the last match against Frankfurt,
you had to be substituted and you haven’t been able to do the
complete training sessions this week. Tomorrow is the match against
Werder Bremen, how are you? Well, it’s not sure
yet if I can play. Maybe I will be forced
to take a break. Not just for care, but because
there is a risk to make it worse. Maybe I can play, but
it’s not sure yet. We’ll keep our fingers crossed. For our
fans, it would be great to see you play. Otherwise I’m gonna come
here and cheer the team. Yes, that would be great. Anyway, I’m glad
you’re back at BVB. And we wanted to know what has changed
in the course of the last three years, for you and for BVB. And are there differences between the old
and the new Mats Hummels in the BVB dress? Leader, fighter and driving force
in the BVB defense – again. He got his no. 15 back. And passing the ball with the outside
of the foot still works as well. The match against Barcelona
was world class quality. And the sports director is sure:
there’s gonna be even more. For me, Mats Hummels is the
best German central defender. I said that before the
season when I was asked, I say that now and I’m gonna
say that in 2020 as well. So everything’s as it has been? Well, we’re still waiting for the first goal
in an official match after his return – he already got close to that. What else: His hair is a little shorter,
he’s in his thirties and he’s a dad now. He’s still really
strong in his duels. But after searching for a long time,
we found one duel he clearly lost – against Nobby in December 2015 during his
last visit to the matchday magazine. Back then, Mats made a
suggestion for improvement. The goals should be
from the recent past. There are no 45-year old
players in the team. So he wants the scenes
to be not that old. He made that wish
almost 4 years ago, and today in the matchday
magazine, it will come true. That’s a promise. We’ll see. I was very happy with the
choice of the scenes back then! But we’ll see, it’s gonna
be an interesting duel. But now we wanna know what you think has
changed at BVB or what is still the same. People asked me that question
several times already. I always said I think that many
things are still the same. Especially the team
behind the team. I still know many people, there
are only few new people. Or people like Otto Addo
you just know as a player. The training ground is still the
same, apart from minor differences. Not much has changed. The club just got even bigger, more international
and with an even higher reputation. Looking at the development in the course
of the last years, that’s not surprising. Apart from that, most
things are familiar to me. And in the end, three
years are not that much. Right, but things change fast. That’s true, but apart from
the players of the team, I feel like things haven’t
changed that much. When I came back, there were only
like 5 players of the 2015/2016 team. But the rest is still the same. You came back 3 months ago. Can you
describe that time and your return? Maybe it was not that easy, but in
the end easier than you thought? Yes, it was easier than I thought.
I thought it would be harder. I could have told you. It felt really good. The team made it easy for me, the people in the stadium
and in the city as well. I don’t know if I
can say that here, but I expected a
little headwind, but I didn’t really feel that. But you made your contribution to that.
Of course. You understand football, your first match
and all the matches so far were great. Of course that helps. But I’m sure I’m also gonna make
mistakes, there’s no way to avoid that. But it’s good it hasn’t
happened so far. If it takes another 5
years, that’s okay. Yes, then it will be fine. Young players often talk about their
next step when they go to another club. Older players are looking for a new
challenge, language or culture. I guess you must have
had different options. Why did you choose
to come back here? It’s difficult to mention all the
pros and cons that I’ve had in mind. The most important thing
was the really good team that has already been
there last year, and the other three new players Thorgan
Hazard, Nico Schulz and Julian Brandt were already known when
I made my decision. So I knew I would come into a highly
competitive team for all three competitions that might still need
a player like me. Some people or even
coaches call me dominant. I like that way of playing and it
seemed like it would fit in here. Of course I also knew the
atmosphere in this stadium… I wanted to mention that, you
knew what to expect here. Yes, that’s one reason.
You know where you’re going. The charm of the new would
have been nice as well. Of course. But I came to that point when I thought
it could be something very good again. I already had a great time here, and at first I wasn’t sure if the
return would maybe ruin that memory, but it’s also a great
challenge to come back. It’s my aim to make that
memory even more successful. We’re definitely glad
to have you back. And I think the team
sometimes needs someone who can be a little dominant
and loud, just as you said. And you’re the right one for that. Now we wanna know if you know all
your old and new team mates. We do a little game
completely in sign language. This week, there was an
allocation of the players. I don’t know if you saw it.
Unfortunately not. We wanna test you and see if
you know all the players. This is player no. 1. It’s easy. Ah okay, that’s Axel Witsel. And it’s his name
in sign language. Never ever.
Yes, it is! Only players?
Yes. Otherwise it could
have been the coach. Don’t think too complicated.
I have no idea. That’s great, isn’t it? Yes… but I have no idea.
Is the “o” important? That’s you.
That’s me? Show us again. Look. Hummels. So if anyone does that, people who
know sign language know it’s me? Well, maybe not
around the world, but it’s spread in
German sign language. Okay. So I’m gonna
keep that in mind. Is that Schmelle? If you see her speak it’s okay,
but how could I have known that? Is it like a glacier? Yes, there’s great scope
for interpretation. You can’t know that. It’s short. I say it’s Reus.
With that gesture. It’s Brandt.
Oh come on. Now there’s an easy one again. Let me tell
you, it’s one of our foreign players. What could that mean? Maybe
a soft pronounciation? Let me think. I say it’s Dan-Axel Zagadou. No. It’s really tough. It’s Piszczu. Ah. Piszczek. Now let’s get back to you and the
question you changed as a person. Let’s hear two of
your team mates. Bad at basketball. Smart. Calm. Funny. Always up for a bit of fun. More experienced. He achieved a lot already and was very
successful, that’s good for the team. Not bad at basketball. Everything else might be worse. Piszczu has a great
sense of humor. Yes, I love his way of
making compliments. Really?
Always very euphoric. He is?
No, very rational. But he’s really funny, although I would
never admit that in front of him. There are very different
opinions about basketball. Julian Brandt says…
Well, that was pure irony. I don’t know if he even won one match.
Well yes, I remember one. But… Is he good?
He’s doing okay, but… But nothing more.
Not really. Piszczu is really good, he’s the
biggest opponent in basketball. We already had nice
duels back then. Last year we had
basketball players here. He’s really good. Of course
Owo was the best, but… But I think he was born
with a basketball. Definitely. Apart from that,
what do you think? Yes, I can definitely
identify with what they said. Always up for fun is right. I like to make jokes, but I
can also laugh about myself. That’s important. But not many people can do that. I wouldn’t say that. Not everybody can laugh
about every topic. So you need to learn which
topics you can talk about. Yes, that comes with the years. At my age, you know
how to talk to them. Exactly. What would you say, how did you change
over the last years as a person? I’d say I’ve become a bit
more calm or relaxed. On the field, but
also off the field. I sometimes just stay out
of certain situations. I call it “choose your fights”. I choose when it’s right to talk about critical
topics or when it’s better not to do it. That’s how I am, also regarding
myself I’m critical. If I had a bad training session,
I think about it for a while, with a bad match
it’s even worse. But I learned that you just
have to accept that sometimes, also regarding the others. Everybody has a bad
day sometimes, no need to talk about
that every time. Now it’s time for the duel
Nobby vs. Mats. Okay. So here I know I
must go into the duel. I’m looking forward to it.
So let’s see. So you count?
3… 2… 1… It might as well hit the post. Usually he scores.
Sad. For Rapha and for us. Okay, I made my decision. 3… 2… 1… There were some clear wins
against Hannover. Come on. Who’s that? Maxi Philipp? At least it was him. Wow, that’s hard.
Yes. You can count. He’s alone in front of the goal. Why would they send us that
scene if he just scores? I don’t know. Maybe he doesn’t score and they laugh
about him if you show that here. Possible. So you count.
3… 2… 1… No, I wanted to take the other
one, I need to catch up. Yes, well. But you won anyhow. So you’ve seen it, please
send us more scenes. It hasn’t been that easy and our
answers were partly tactical. It was difficult.
We love difficult scenes. Let’s take a look at the
intermediate result. Nobby 9, my former number, and
my guests gained 11 points. I’m glad I caught up at least a little. Here’s the great picture
from last week. You can do that with Owo’s hair. Mats tried it with mine,
too, but it didn’t work. So we took a great picture as well that
you can purchase by auction very soon. It’s all for the benefit
of our foundation. On Saturday, there’s the
match against Bremen, a team that currently has
many injured players. There’s the image of the hit
boxer, do you think that fits? Yes, maybe. A team that has so many injured
players often fights all the more. The most dangerous thing is to
think that they’re already beaten. But we know that
Bremen has a good team and a great coach with
Florian Kohfeldt. We know some of their
players like Nuri and Ömer, I also played with Marco Friedl. So we know about the
team’s quality. But it’s a home match for us, so
we have to win against every team, and we want to.
Definitely. And we’re gonna win against everyone.
At least we hope so. Thanks for coming here today
after more than 1300 days. We’re not gonna wait that
long until next time! My contract doesn’t
last that long. Right. You might be here then. Nobody can replace you, Nobby. Oh, these are nice
closing words. I know what to say so I can
come back. It was fun. Okay, so please keep your fingers
crossed, in front of the TV, listening to Netradio
or in the stadium. See you soon, yours
Nobby and Mats
