Sometimes when people read my work, they
write me and they want a relationship with me or they want me to answer or
they want me to do something. And the relationship I’ve offered is the one
on paper, not a relationship with the author but a relationship with really where the — in a strange way, where the author
has disappeared in the work. So it’s complicated. On the one hand, you know, people are responding
to you, you feel very moved and honored and privileged that they’ve loved your work. But many times, when a writer, a young writer or
reader writes to me and wants a lot of answers or wants an ongoing relationship to me, I tell them I’ll meet you
between the covers of my books.
