Travel leaves a lasting impact on our lives, long after we’re back home. It exposes us to new cultures, experiences, people. It can challenge our perspectives. Travel changes us.
But so often, that change comes through passive consumption. Are there ways we can turn travel from consumption to an active exchange? Is it possible to travel better, more ethically? Welcome to BRIGHT Magazine’s first ever book, TREAD BRIGHTLY. We’re putting together a collection of stories, essays, and photos that get to the heart of what it means to travel ethically.
Google “voluntourism,” and you’ll find hundreds of ways to “do good while you travel.” Teach English in China on your gap year. Join a short-term missions trip to Uganda. Stay at an eco-lodge in Costa Rica and clean beaches before surfing. But good intentions don’t always translate to good deeds. How do we make sure that when we travel, we do no harm? In this book, we’ll investigate how to tell if that orphanage in Cambodia is pocketing your money. We’ll ask experts for their best advice on how to spend a gap year. We want this book to change the way you explore the world. BRIGHT magazine tells fresh
stories about the world’s biggest problems for the people who want to
solve them. We’re an award-winning nonprofit digital magazine based
in Nairobi, Kenya. For the last year, we’ve been covering under-reported topics like global health, education, gender, and poverty. And we do so with an eye to solutions. Our stories don’t just focus on problems, but also on the people who are working to solve them. TREAD BRIGHTLY is for anyone who’s thinking about traveling the world and doing good— whether you’re a college student who wants to make the most of a summer, a young professional who wants to explore life outside the cubicle, or a retiree who wants to finally go to India. This is our most ambitious project yet. With the funds raised on this campaign, we’ll be able to hire top journalists and photographers from around the world. Your contributions will allow us to publish these stories online and for the first
time in a beautiful book. At BRIGHT, we believe storytelling shapes how we solve the world’s problems. Let’s do it better. I hate when they call me mama, because it makes me feel very old…
